One
of the best things about retirement is the time available to pursue
your dreams. Whether it's preparing for a second career, gaining a new
skill such as decorating or computer technology, or simply immersing
yourself in a learning experience, Sumter can give you the world with
continuing education programs at one of our accredited higher-learning
institutions.
The University of South Carolina Sumter
has been an integral part of the
Sumter community since 1973. Currently a two-year college, it is in the
process of expanding to a four-year university. Along with many
traditional degree programs, USC Sumter also offers the "Sixty Plus"
program for SC residents age 60 and above. For a nominal $10
application fee and purchase of materials, senior students may enroll
in classes of their own choosing, either for academic credit or for the
benefit of increasing personal
knowledge. While enrolled, students may participate in such activities
as the Student Art Guild, Gospel Choir, Outdoor Adventure Club and
more. Cultural events including health science lectures, poetry
readings, music performances, art receptions and a wide variety of
other activities are also available for students’ enjoyment.
Recreational opportunities include the campus Wellness Center, a
multipurpose gym and much more.
Central Carolina Technical College is a
comprehensive two year
institution of higher learning that provides quality, affordable
post-secondary education and lifelong educational opportunities. SC
residents over 60 can register for continuing education programs on a
free or reducedrate basis in a wide range of subjects, including
beginning Internet, arts & crafts, auto repair for women,
motorcycle safety, wedding planning, golf, business and over a dozen
more, as well as more than 300 online courses.
Morris
College, a four-year college, provides the "Organization Management"
program. Adults with 60 credit hours can achieve a degree in 18 months.
Other opportunities for retirees
interested in pursuing additional education include Troy University
offering Masters degrees in Education, Management and Public
Administration, with locations in downtown Sumter and Shaw Air Force
Base. Also Located at Shaw Air Force Base are St. Leo University,
Webster University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
